MOME 790 Review / Spring 2026

Week 8

This is the final version of the cartoon I was workin on last week. I really enjoy this style because it’s the exact opposite of what I normally have to do, in that the key is to keep things as simple as possible. Its sort of relaxing but still require focus.

This week I’ve mostly been dealing with my research paper formatting and polishing. I’m working on some other animations but I’m still in pre production on them.

I’ve also been working on a final reel of all my project elements so that I can have a single file to turn in at the end.

This is the rough cut I have so far:

Week 7

I’ve been working on a new stand up animation and a consistent style is beginning to take root. After trying the collage style a few times, I think a more colorful cartoon look is more appealing. I want to use sketch and toon 3D characters but Im not there yet, so for now I’m introducing other 3D toon elements. Im trying out hard shading to give the animations a little more depth.

In addition to that, I’m working on an animated cartoon that is a single joke. Basically a 4 panel cartoon in motion. The concept of the animation is to keep it as simple as possible. I feel that the restraint is the key to making these work.

Below are style frames that I am dialing in.

This is an example of the animation style. Mostly had keyframes, and as simple as possible. The key to this series is restraint.

Week 6

This week has been a little more relaxed. I finished the “Shredded Cheese” animation, but converted it to 2D. The 3D just didn’t work.

For the stand up videos, I use a more saturated version of the existing brand colors. Sometimes I have to use a different color but I only do so when necessary.

This week I’ve been working on a short 2D animation, prepping a new stand up animation, and continuing to work on the interactive story.

Below are some quick thumbnails I’ve thrown together for the animations this week. I’ve found that keeping the thumbnails as loose and quick as possible is the most effective way to do it on this timeline. If I try to make detailed storyboards I get lost in them and they take too much time. Or I get frozen trying to find ideas.

Styleframes for upcoming standup animation. I’m going to experiment with a mix of regular 2D and Toon Shaded 3D.

Week 5

This is a post I made this week, with a tight turnaround. I would rather give myself more time, but it’s good to know I can make something happen in a pinch. The deadlines of this project are giving me a little more efficiency in some areas.

These are tests I’ve been doing with a painted 3D style but I’m having trouble getting the materials to look right. If I cant figure it out soon I’ll have to move on to a different look.

I got this far with this piece and decided that the visual style just doesn’t work. I definitely learned a little by working on it but I’m going to change it to a completely 2D style

Collage Character Loop

Worlds Fair 2036 Final

For this piece I wanted really wanted to work in 3D, but I wanted to capture a vintage technicolor look.

In addition to adjusting the levels and saturation, I created a system where each comp is spit into red, blue, and green channels, and then imperfectly aligned.

This collage character was rigged and animated in Moho, then exported as a PNG sequence into after effects.
